Information

Hornbeam

Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) is a native tree or hedging plant that resembles Beech but is a much smaller tree which spreads with age. Fluted grey bark with ovate green leaves turning yellow in autumn and then to brown. Makes an excellent native hedge with the leaves remaining until spring. One of the best hedging plants for heavy soil types as it prefers a heavy wet soil. Also, will grow well on chalky soil. Tolerant of shade and moist positions.

All plants supplied are strong, well established and ready for immediate outdoor planting.

Suggested Planting Distances

Plant between 30-60cm (1 to 2 feet) apart - approx. 3 plants per metre in a single row.

N.B The closer together plants are planted within this spacing the quicker the hedge will establish.
